The Best Cabinet Hardware

Cabinet hardware is touched more often than almost anything else in a home. Knobs, pulls, and hinges are opened and closed thousands of times a year. The finish must resist wear. The fasteners must hold. The materials must be solid, not hollow or plated plastic. These are the pieces that define a kitchen or bathroom for 20 years.

How to Choose

Solid brass and solid iron are the materials that last. Hollow brass-plated zinc looks identical to solid brass on day one and nothing like it on day 500. Weight is the test: solid hardware is heavy. Hollow hardware is light. For pulls, center-to-center measurement must match your existing holes. For hinges, overlay type (full, half, or inset) must match your cabinet door style.

What to Look For

Six things that separate the good from the rest.

Material

Solid brass and solid iron last indefinitely. Zinc die-cast is durable and affordable. Avoid hollow hardware and plastic-core with metal plating.

Finish durability

PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) finishes are the most durable. Oil-rubbed bronze and matte black resist fingerprints. Polished chrome shows everything.

Center-to-center

The distance between screw holes. Must match your existing cabinet holes unless you are willing to drill new ones. 3-inch and 5-inch are the most common.

Weight test

Hold it. Heavy means solid metal. Light means hollow or plastic-core. The weight test is the fastest way to judge quality.

Hinge type

Full overlay, half overlay, or inset. Must match your cabinet door style. Soft-close mechanism is worth the upgrade in every case.

Screw quality

The screws included with hardware are often cheap. Replace them with machine screws of the correct length and finish for a cleaner installation.
