Best Flint and Steel Fire Starters

A lighter fails in two conditions: wet and cold. Both happen in the field. A ferrocerium rod works in rain, works in freezing temperatures, and has no fuel to run out -- it produces a shower of sparks at 5,400 degrees Fahrenheit by scraping metal against metal, which is a principle that does not degrade with weather. It requires tinder preparation and technique, which is the point. The fire starters on this list include ferro rods, fatwood, and natural tinder that burns because of what it is, not because of a chemical accelerant.

How to Choose

Ferro rod diameter is the primary spec: 3/8-inch diameter rods are standard; 1/2-inch rods produce a larger spark shower and have a longer service life. The striker matters: the spine of a Mora knife or any carbon steel edge works well; dedicated strikers included with the kit are usually better than improvised tools. A tinder bundle -- dry grass, cedar bark, fatwood shavings -- is required for the spark to become a fire. Carry dry tinder in a waterproof container. The spark is not the bottleneck; the tinder is.

ORIGINAL DESIGN

Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel Army

Light My Fire developed the modern ferrocerium fire starter with the Swedish Army in the 1990s. The Army model is a 3/8-inch diameter rod with a plastic striker, rated for approximately 12,000 strikes. The striker is designed to produce maximum spark contact. The rod works when wet, in wind, at altitude, and in temperatures below freezing -- conditions that defeat butane lighters.

Light My Fire designed this for military field use. The 12,000-strike rating is based on actual military testing, not a marketing estimate.

HEAVY DUTY

Bayite Survival Fire Starter 1/2 Inch

A 1/2-inch diameter ferrocerium rod with a multi-tool striker that includes a blade for scraping tinder. The larger diameter produces a heavier spark shower and extends the service life to approximately 20,000 strikes. The paracord lanyard with the handle allows attachment to a pack. For extended expeditions where fire is a survival tool, the extra diameter is worth the extra weight.

A 1/2-inch rod produces a noticeably heavier spark shower. In difficult conditions with marginal tinder, this difference matters.
