The Best Notebooks

A good notebook has paper that takes ink without bleeding or feathering, binding that lies flat when open, and a cover that survives daily carry. Most notebooks fail at least one of these tests. These are the ones that pass all three.

How to Choose

Paper weight matters: 80 gsm is the minimum for fountain pen ink. Thinner paper bleeds through. Ruling preference is personal: dot grid is the most versatile, lined is best for writing, blank is best for sketching. Binding should lie flat. Sewn signatures are stronger than glued spines. Hardcovers protect in a bag. Softcovers are lighter and more flexible. Size is use-dependent: A5 for carry, A4 for the desk.

What to Look For

Six things that separate the good from the rest.

Paper weight

80 gsm is the minimum for fountain pen ink. 90 gsm handles wet inks without ghosting. 100 gsm+ is overkill for most use.

Paper texture

Smooth paper suits fountain pens and gel pens. Textured paper suits pencils and felt-tips. Most premium notebooks use smooth paper.

Binding

Sewn signatures lie flat when open. Perfect (glued) binding may not. Spiral binding lies flat but catches in bags.

Ruling

Dot grid is the most versatile: guides writing, allows sketching, and does not dominate the page. Lined for pure writing. Blank for sketching.

Cover

Hardcovers protect in a bag and provide a writing surface anywhere. Softcovers are lighter and more flexible.

Size

A5 (5.8 x 8.3 inches) is the most versatile. Pocket (3.5 x 5.5) for carry. A4 for the desk.
