The Best Oil Lanterns

An oil lantern has one advantage over every electric alternative: it works without batteries, without charging, and without any infrastructure whatsoever. Fill it with kerosene, lamp oil, or even vegetable oil and it burns. The steel-and-glass construction means it survives being knocked over, dropped, and hung in wind. These are the lanterns worth keeping.

How to Choose

Hot blast lanterns (where the air intake and exhaust are separated) burn more efficiently and are harder to extinguish in wind than cold blast designs. Dietz and Feuerhand both make genuine hot blast designs. For outdoor use: a lantern with a wire bail (hanging handle) and a substantial glass globe is the practical choice. The fuel capacity tells you how many hours of burn time per fill.

Dietz #76 Original Oil Burning Lantern
BROOKLYN SINCE 1840

Dietz #76 Original Oil Burning Lantern

Dietz has been making oil lanterns since 1840 and the No. 76 has been in production for decades. The hot blast design separates air intake (through the base) from exhaust (through the top cap), which produces a bright, stable flame that resists wind. The globe is borosilicate glass; the body is tin-plated steel. Burns kerosene, lamp oil, or citronella oil. Twelve hours of burn time per fill.

The lantern that has been in production for over 150 years because it works correctly.

Feuerhand Storm Lantern 276 German Made
GERMAN STORM LANTERN

Feuerhand Storm Lantern 276 German Made

Made in Germany. Feuerhand is the German equivalent of Dietz -- a hot blast lantern made from tin-plated steel with a borosilicate globe designed to withstand direct water contact without shattering. The Storm Lantern 276 is used by the German military and by professional outdoor workers who need a lantern that survives actual storm conditions. Brighter than the Dietz, slightly more expensive.

The German military standard. Made to survive conditions that would extinguish most lanterns.

Dietz #100 Jupiter Hot Blast Lantern
LARGE FORMAT

Dietz #100 Jupiter Hot Blast Lantern

The largest production hot blast lantern Dietz makes. The No. 100 Jupiter has a larger globe, a bigger fuel reservoir (18 hours of burn time), and a brighter flame than the standard No. 76. For barn use, outdoor dining, and illuminating a campsite rather than a single work area, the larger format makes the difference visible.

When the No. 76 is not bright enough. The large-format lantern for spaces rather than tasks.
