The Best Paint Scrapers

Paint scraping is the work that determines how long the new paint job lasts. Failed paint removed cleanly before painting means the new coat bonds to solid material. Failed paint left in place means the new coat fails at the same rate as the old one underneath it. The right tool for the job is either a hook scraper for heavy paint removal or a carbide-blade scraper for finish scraping on wood surfaces.

How to Choose

Hook scrapers remove the bulk of failed paint quickly on flat surfaces. Carbide scrapers extend the service life of the blade dramatically -- a carbide insert will outlast ten high-carbon steel blades. Pull scrapers are better on wood siding because they cut with the grain and lift paint cleanly; push scrapers tend to dig into soft grain. Keep the blade sharp: a dull scraper tears rather than cuts, leaving a rough surface that holds the new paint unevenly.

HOOK SCRAPER

Hyde Tools 4-Edge Hook Scraper

A 1.75-inch four-edge hook scraper from Hyde -- when one edge dulls, rotate to the next. The hook geometry pulls paint off the surface cleanly without gouging the wood fiber underneath. The handle is hardwood with a flared end for palm pressure. This is the tool for exterior paint removal on clapboard and trim.

Four usable edges means you quadruple the working life before sharpening. The hook geometry cuts cleanly on the pull stroke without digging.

CARBIDE BLADE

Sandvik Paint Scraper with Carbide Blade

A Bahco-brand pull scraper with a replaceable carbide-tipped blade. The carbide tip stays sharp through ten times the scraping that high-carbon steel lasts before dulling. The hardwood handle provides a comfortable grip for the long, repeated strokes of exterior paint removal. Replacement carbide blades are available separately and are easy to swap in the field.

Carbide stays sharp ten times longer than high-carbon steel. On a full exterior paint job, this is the difference between one blade change and ten.
