The Best Screwdrivers

A screwdriver is the most commonly used hand tool in any household. A cheap one strips screws, slips from the hand, and wears out the tip in a year. A quality screwdriver has a hardened tip that grips the fastener, a handle that fills the palm, and a shaft that will not twist under torque. Buy good ones once.

How to Choose

The tip must fit the fastener precisely. A Phillips #2 that is slightly undersized will cam out and strip the screw head. Hardened chrome-vanadium steel tips resist wear. Acetate or cushion-grip handles provide comfort and resist solvents. A magnetic tip is a convenience, not a gimmick. Buy individual sizes rather than a set full of sizes you will never use.

What to Look For

Six things that separate the good from the rest.

Tip hardness

Chrome-vanadium steel (Cr-V) holds its shape under torque. Soft tips round over and strip screws. The tip is the most important part of a screwdriver.

Tip fit

A Phillips #2 should seat fully in a #2 screw with no wobble. An undersized tip cams out. An oversized tip strips the recess. Precision machining at the tip is what separates a $3 screwdriver from a $10 one.

Handle design

The handle should fill the palm and not rotate when you apply torque. Cushion-grip handles resist solvents and sweat. Round handles are fine for light work. Hex or fluted handles resist rolling off the bench.

Shaft material

Chrome-vanadium steel is the standard. It resists bending and twisting under load. Avoid plain carbon steel shafts that corrode in humid environments.

Magnetic tip

A magnetic tip holds the screw in place for one-handed starting. Useful in tight spaces and overhead work. Not a gimmick.

Shaft length

Stubby drivers for tight spaces. Standard length for general work. Long-reach for recessed fasteners. You will eventually need all three.

Good, Better, Best

What you get at each price tier. A $10 Klein screwdriver outperforms a $3 hardware store screwdriver for 20 years.

Good $5 -- $15 each

Klein or Stanley individual drivers. Hardened tips, comfortable handles, and they last for years of regular use. Buy the sizes you actually need rather than a 20-piece set.

Better $25 -- $50 set

Best $60 -- $100 set
